National Cathedral Project Not Driven by Personal Interests – Hon. Okudzeto

The member of parliament for North Tongu constituency , Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has reiterated that his opposition to the National Cathedral project is not driven by personal interests but by his desire to safeguard the State’s scarce resources.
According to him, over $58 million has been taken from state coffers and invested in the project without parliamentary approval, and it is his duty to ensure that public funds are used transparently and for the benefit of the Ghanaian people.
In an interview with JoyNews on Tuesday, May 2, Mr. Ablakwa emphasized that his focus is on accountability and justice, not monetary gain.
He said, “It is about justice. It is about accountability. Public funds are being expended without accounting to the people. Over $58 million has been taken out of our coffers without parliamentary approval. That is my concern.”
On Tuesday, May 2, the High Court dismissed a contempt case against Mr. Ablakwa, who had refused service of court processes on the grounds of improper service. The court stated that the plaintiff’s evidence was inconsistent and doubtful, and the contempt application failed to meet the legal standard of proof beyond a reasonable doubt. In response, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Kwetey, commented that the case was an exercise in futility.
