On the evening of September 8th, Ghana experienced a widespread power blackout, prompting explanations from the country’s power producer, GRIDCo, and distributor, ECG, in separate statements.
Reports of the outage surfaced across various social media platforms, affecting several regions simultaneously, including the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, Central, and Eastern Regions.
GRIDCo released a statement attributing the blackout to a disturbance in the power systems. Their statement, issued three hours after the incident, read:
“The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), the operator of the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS), informs the public that a system disturbance occurred at 19:03, affecting parts of the country. Restoration efforts began immediately, and by 21:00 GMT, three-quarters of customers had their power supply restored. Work to fully restore power continues as generation is gradually brought back online.”
Notably, just before GRIDCo’s statement, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) issued its own statement, identifying a technical challenge originating from the Ghana Grid Company Limited as the cause of the blackout.
ECG expressed its intention to restore power promptly once the underlying issue was resolved.
