Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton is a famous American politician and diplomat who served as the 67th United States secretary of state under President Barack Obama from 2009 to 2013.
Rodham, who grew up in the Chicago suburb of Park Ridge, graduated from Wellesley College in 1969 and from Yale Law School in 1973. She relocated to Arkansas after serving as a congressional legal counsel and married future President Bill Clinton in 1975; the two had met at Yale. Clinton co-founded Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families in 1977. In 1978, she became the first female chair of the Legal Services Corporation, and the following year, she became the first female partner at Little Rock’s Rose Law Firm.
Hillary Clinton was named one of the hundred most significant lawyers in America by the National Law Journal twice. Clinton served as Arkansas’s First Lady from 1979 to 1981, and again from 1983 to 1992. Clinton fought for healthcare reform as the first lady of the United States. Her primary project, the Clinton health-care plan, was defeated in Congress in 1994. Clinton was a driving force behind the introduction of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, the Adoption and Safe Families Act, and the Foster Care Independence Act in 1997 and 1999.
Early Life and Education
Hillary Clinton grew up in a Methodist household that originally settled in Chicago. Her family relocated to Park Ridge, a Chicago suburb, when she was three years old. Hugh Rodham, her father, was of English and Welsh descent and ran a modest but successful textile firm that he had built. Dorothy Howell, her mother, was a homemaker of Dutch, English, French Canadian (from Quebec), Scottish, and Welsh ancestry. Hugh and Tony were her two younger brothers.
Rodham was a favored student among her instructors in Park Ridge public schools when she was a child. As a Brownie and a Girl Scout, she participated in swimming and softball and won multiple badges. She was impressed by the United States’ efforts during the Space Race and wrote to NASA in 1961, asking what she could do to become an astronaut, only to be told that women were not admitted into the program.
