Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, Ghana’s Inspector General of Police (IGP), has revealed that the unfounded allegations made by certain fellow police officers caused significant distress to his reputation and family.

These allegations came to light amidst an ongoing investigation into an alleged plot to remove him from office before the 2024 general elections.

One of the key figures in this investigation, COP George Mensah, claimed that the IGP orchestrated the recording of the leaked tape and held the original copy. However, Dr. Dampare strongly denied these allegations, emphasizing the absence of concrete evidence to support such claims.

Appearing before a seven-member bipartisan Committee in Parliament to address these allegations, Dr. Dampare expressed his frustration with the situation. He stated, “Instead of them focusing on the matter, they came out with wild allegations that touched my person, the police leadership that I lead, and the entirety of the police service. Until today, I am now being told that they have some evidence. Without a shred of evidence at the time that they were making the allegations, not a shred of evidence.”

The IGP went on to describe the profound pain these baseless allegations had caused him, his family, his team, and the entire police force. He expressed his innocence and dedication to his job of ensuring public safety but questioned the fairness of having to respond to unfounded claims.

Dr. Dampare’s decision to appear before the committee was driven by his respect for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the police service, and the institutions of the state. He emphasized his commitment to answering all questions and addressing the wild allegations made by his colleagues.

The seven-member bipartisan Committee, chaired by Mr. Samuel Atta Akyea, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Abuakwa South, with Mr. James Agalga, a National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for Builsa North as the Vice-Chairman, is currently investigating the authenticity of a leaked audio recording that allegedly discusses a plot to remove IGP Dampare from office.

The recording surfaced on July 11, 2023, allegedly involving a Police Commissioner and a politician.
