José Mourinho Biography

Jose Mário dos Santos Mourinho Félix is one of the most accomplished and renowned football managers in history, a former Portuguese football player who is now the head coach of the Italian Serie A team Roma. He was lovingly referred to as “The Special One” by the British media.

Mourinho began his coaching career after leaving a mediocre midfielder career in the Portuguese leagues. He first assisted Sir Bobby Robson as an interpreter at Sporting CP and Porto.

Later, he won victories as a Barcelona assistant, working with both Robson and Robson’s successor, Louis van Gaal.

Mourinho returned to lead Porto in 2002 after brief stints at Benfica and Unio de Leiria. During his tenure, Porto won the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Champions League, making it the club’s first European Cup triumph since 1987.

He also led the team to two Primeira Liga championships, a Taça de Portugal success, and two UEFA Cup victories. Because of his success, Chelsea invited him to visit England again in 2004.

He was known for having a confident approach early in his management career. He is credited with saying, “I think I’m a special one,” which came to represent his persona.

In three seasons at Chelsea, he won two Premier League championships, an FA Cup, and two League Cups.

He left the team in 2007 because of purported arguments with Roman Abramovich, the owner.

Mourinho returned to Chelsea after leaving Real Madrid in 2013, where he won the League Cup and yet another league championship before being fired in 2015 due to a string of disappointing outcomes.

He was hired at Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, respectively, while still in England, but his terms at both clubs were brief and tumultuous.
