Ken Ofori-Atta announces date for National Cathedral Commissioning

The Finance Minister of Ghana, Ken Ofori-Atta, has disclosed that the ongoing National Cathedral project will be officially opened to the public on Wednesday, March 6, 2024. This significant date coincides with Ghana’s 67th Independence Day celebration.

During the Mid-year Budget Review, the Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to prioritizing the project, stating that progress is being made at a rapid pace. The National Cathedral aims to serve as an interdenominational sacred space for the nation and symbolize the significant role of faith in nation-building.

Mr. Ofori-Atta also stated that the government is in collaboration with Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs) to train individuals in various disciplines, including fashion, catering, cosmetology, electronics, and business management. Over 46,000 and 100,000 people have already received training in these areas.

The Finance Minister expressed his gratitude to the FBO partners for their efforts in promoting life-saving measures such as mask-wearing, social distancing, and enhanced hygiene protocols within communities.

The construction of the National Cathedral, estimated to cost over $100 million, has commenced after the demolition of structures on the proposed site at Ridge in Accra. Renowned architect Sir David Adjaye has been chosen to design the 5,000-seater Auditorium Cathedral.

The National Cathedral project is a fulfillment of President Akufo-Addo’s pledge to God before winning the 2016 elections. In addition to its religious significance, the Cathedral aims to provide a national park, create employment opportunities, introduce new skills and technology, and attract national, regional, and international tourists.
