McCord was born in Mount Laurel, New Jersey, and graduated from St. Joseph’s Preparatory School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Derek McCord, McCord’s father, was a quarterback for Rutgers from 1988 to 1992.
Before the start of his freshman year in high school, he received his first college scholarship offer from Central Michigan. As a sophomore, he set a school record by passing for 2,883 yards and 35 touchdowns.
During his junior season, McCord passed for 2,399 yards and 31 touchdowns before missing the final four games due to injury.
As a senior, he was voted Pennsylvania Gatorade Player of the Year after completing 65 percent of his passes and throwing for 1,582 yards and 21 touchdowns.
