Labor union declares strike action starting on Monday, July 10

Organized Labour has declared a strike effective Monday, July 10, in response to the sacking of three union leaders by the management of Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited for joining a union. Other union members have also reportedly been subjected to abuses by the predominantly Chinese management.

Efforts by Organised Labour to have the three union leaders reinstated since March have yielded no results, despite the involvement of the National Labour Commission (NLC) and the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations. Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah, Secretary General of the Ghana Trades Union Congress and spokesperson for Organized Labour, has served notice of the industrial action.

“Even the President of Ghana cannot stop any worker in Ghana from exercising his or her right to belong to a trade union,” Dr. Yaw Baah said at a press conference in March.

As a first step in calling the management of Sunon-Asogli to order, Dr. Yaw Baah has directed public sector workers not to report to work on Monday, July 10. The abuses suffered by members of the union are a clear violation of their rights, and Organized Labour’s decision to strike sends a strong message that such abuses will not be tolerated.
