Dr. Adutwum defends Free SHS Policy and highlights impressive WASSCE results

The Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has strongly criticized critics of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy while highlighting that the expansion of enrolment has not compromised learning outcomes in schools.
Dr. Adutwum asserts that the impressive results achieved in the 2022 West African Senior Certificate Examination (WASCE) serve as a testament to the government’s unwavering commitment to transforming the country’s education sector.
Speaking at the 60th anniversary celebration of Kumasi High School in the Ashanti Region, Dr. Adutwum lauded the government’s efforts in effectively implementing the Free SHS policy, with a specific focus on increasing enrolment and improving learning outcomes.
He further disclosed the Education Ministry’s plans to recruit personnel dedicated to the maintenance of facilities in senior high schools, aiming to enhance the overall educational environment.
Addressing skeptics of the policy, Dr. Adutwum stated, “For all those who believed that increasing enrolment at high schools would diminish learning outcomes, I have news for you: increasing enrolment did not compromise learning outcomes. Just take a look at Kumasi High School. Examine the WAEC results, and you will discover that we achieved the best learning outcomes in the country last year.
Over the past eight years, the 2022 results were the most exceptional. However, I don’t blame those who hold the conjecture that things are going awry, as countries around the world typically face challenges when increasing enrolment.”
Dr. Adutwum emphasized that the government remains fully dedicated to striking a balance between access and quality in education, ensuring that Ghanaian students receive a robust education that equips them for the future.
