Meet Prof. Mariam El Boakye-Gyasi: Ghana’s first female Associate Professor of Pharmaceutics
Dr. Mariam El-Boakye Gyasi
Dr. Mariam El-Boakye Gyasi has made history by becoming Ghana’s first female Associate Professor of Pharmaceutics. Although the news of her professorial conferment has yet to be officially announced by GhanaWeb, her achievement has been celebrated on social media by her former student and other organizations.
Dr. Gyasi is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Pharmaceutics at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, where she teaches Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology to both undergraduate and graduate students. She holds a PhD and MPhil in Pharmaceutics and a Bachelor of Pharmacy Degree from KNUST, and is a registered pharmacist and member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana.
Dr. Gyasi is also the postgraduate seminars and research coordinator and deputy examinations officer for the Department of Pharmaceutics. She serves as the Academic Capacity Lead for FIP-UNESCO UNITWIN Center for Excellence in Africa and is a member of FIP-WISE. Additionally, she is a Fellow of the University of Michigan African Presidential Scholars’ Program.
Dr. Gyasi’s research interests in Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology include drug formulation and quality control, the use of local excipients in drug formulation, and natural polymers and nanotechnology.
Her groundbreaking achievement as Ghana’s first female Associate Professor of Pharmaceutics is an inspiration to women in academia and the pharmaceutical industry.
