Ministry of Foreign Affairs begins investigation on mistreatment of Ghanaians in China

In our earlier reportage on issues of mishandling of Ghanaian nationals in some parts of the world, we noted with urgency on how some Ghanaians in China have been mistreated in the wake of the deadly Coronavirus pandemic. Following our publications among many, it has come to our attention that, the Government of Ghana through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has engaged the Chinese Government through the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana and its Embassy over the week.

In a new development, the Member of Parliament for Nsawam Adoagyiri Constituency and Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Foreign Affairs Hon. Frank Annoh-Dompreh has disclosed that, he met with the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana over reports of mistreatment of Ghanaians in China. According to him, they both agreed to constitute a committee to investigate the reports and find a lasting solution on the matter.

“I met the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana over reports of mistreatment of Ghanaians in China, Guangdong Province supported by Ministry of Foreign Affairs has set up a special task force to investigate all reports. Complaints are settled daily.” He disclosed.

According to him, “During the pandemic, the Province will take no legal action against illegal migrants, including no arrests, no penalty and no repatriation.”

Hon. Frank Annoh-Dompreh also added that, the local government has put in place special packages for African tenants who have been discharged from self quarantine including free accommodation. “African tenants discharged from quarantine receive assistance from local government in securing accommodation” He assured.

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Foreign Affairs indicated that, the Chinese Government has introduced some new and special measures in some sectors to address the challenges faced by Africans in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic. “The Chinese Govt has introduced undifferentiated service measures in nine industries including health, education, catering, transportation, tourism, hotel, shopping mall, residence and housing leasing industry to solve the common problems encountered by Africans.” He explained.

In conclusion, Hon. Frank Annoh-Dompreh revealed that, his outfit has been reliably informed on some positive development on how Ghanaian nationals in China were treated, saying the situation is now calm. That notwithstanding, he will keep watch over reports and news on the subject matter. “I am reliably informed the situation is much calmer now. However, I will keep an eye on events as they develop.”
