Piwak supports 200 victims of Akosombo Dam spillage across Tongu districts with GH¢200,000

In a heartfelt and impactful ceremony held at Aveyime-Battor in North Tongu district of the Volta region, Piwak Natural Health, led by its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Prince Nelson Mortoti has extended direct financial support to two hundred (200) victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage across the three Tongu districts – South, Central, and North Tongu each beneficiary received GH¢1,000, totaling GH¢200,000, as part of Piwak’s continued effort to support recovery and build resilience in flood-affected communities.

The event, themed “Rebuilding Together, Restoring Hope”, was chaired by Togbe Komla Sakpiti V, Dufia of Bakpa Awadiwoe-Kome, and witnessed the presence of several high-profile personalities and dignitaries. The event was successfully coordinated by a vibrant team led by Agboni Nicholas Kelvin, popularly known as CoverGhana.

In his address, Dr. Mortoti reflected on the devastation caused by the October 2023 Akosombo Dam spillage, which submerged homes, displaced families, disrupted education, destroyed farmlands, and left communities distressed. He emphasized that while the spillage was a technical necessity to preserve the dam’s structural integrity, its consequences called for a united and sustained humanitarian response.

“This is not charity – it is responsibility,” Dr. Mortoti stated, explaining that the financial assistance was aimed at restoring dignity and empowering affected individuals to rebuild their lives on their terms – whether by restarting businesses, paying school fees, rebuilding homes, or addressing medical needs.

This initiative marks Phase Three of Piwak’s intervention. In 2023, Piwak had earlier donated relief items valued at GH¢40,000—including food, sanitary supplies, water, clothing, and shelter materials – to victims across the Tongu districts

Beneficiaries for this recent phase were drawn from South Tongu (60), Central Tongu (60), and North Tongu (80), with provisions made for their transportation to ensure full participation.

Dr. Mortoti further called for collaborative efforts among government, corporate bodies, NGOs, and individuals to rebuild essential infrastructure such as schools, roads, and health facilities, while also urging the inclusion of victim-focused relief in the 2025 national budget.

“Our homes may have been displaced, but not our humanity. These floods have brought us together. Let’s channel this unity into action,” he declared.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for North Tongu, Mrs. Victoria Amefadzi Yawa-Doe commended Piwak Natural Health for the timely intervention. She noted that the donation would bring much-needed relief to many families in the district who are still grappling with the aftermath of the flood disaster.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for South Tongu, Mrs. Victoria Dzeklo also expressed appreciation for the support, stating that the financial aid would go a long way in helping victims rebuild their lives. She called on other stakeholders to join in supporting the ongoing recovery efforts, especially in the area of psychological counseling.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Central Tongu, Mr. Addison Dzodi Mornyuie praised the initiative as a model of private sector partnership in disaster recovery. He emphasised that such gestures not only alleviate immediate hardship but also complement government efforts to restore livelihoods.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Maxwell Kwame Lukutor, Member of Parliament for South Tongu, praised Piwak Natural Health for its compassionate intervention.

“This gesture goes beyond money. It is an investment in humanity, in healing, and in hope,” he said, adding that the recovery process must be a collective, long-term mission. He appealed to stakeholders not to forget the victims as time passed.

In his closing address, Togbe Komla Sakpiti V, Dufia of Bakpa Awadiwoe-Kome and Chairperson, for the occasion, commended the donors and stakeholders for standing with the Tongu people.

“Let us walk away from here not just with cash but with courage. The journey to recovery is long, but together, we shall arrive stronger,” he said.

He encouraged beneficiaries to use the funds wisely and called for ongoing collaboration to rebuild communities, schools, clinics, and the affected local economy.

The event concluded with heartfelt appreciation from beneficiaries, community leaders, and stakeholders, applauding Piwak’s unwavering commitment and community-centered approach.
