Present the Free SHS Bill to Teacher Unions and major stakeholders for their inputs before Parliament -GNAT advises 

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has called for Teacher Unions’ involvement in the passing of the Free SHS Bill at its 2024 annual statutory meeting held at the GNAT Village in Abankro from July 22-25, 2024.

The meeting saw the leadership deliberate on various issues including the Free SHS Bill.

GNAT suggested that before the Free SHS Bill is laid before Parliament, it must be be presented to the Teacher Unions and other major stakeholders for their inputs.

GNAT stated that teachers and their unions must be involved in policymaking in education.

Teachers and their unions must be at the heart of policymaking in education. We must be at the table where and when decisions are made. The Governing Council therefore calls for a coordinated and institutionalised social dialogue between government and representatives of the teacher unions as the principal milieu for developing policies on education, the teaching profession and teaching in general.

THE FREE SHS BILL

In the light of the above, Council calls for the current Free SHS Bill intended to be laid before Parliament to be presented to the Teacher Unions and the other major stakeholders for their inputs to be captured in it at its embryonic stage before it is laid before Parliament.

We caution that this should not be an afterthought. The GNAT hereby serves notice, that any attempt to push the said Bill through without our inputs will result in serious consequences. Policymakers should therefore be mindful of their actions.
