The Ghana National Fire Service has recently expressed serious concern regarding the escalating number of prank calls flooding its call centre, significantly impeding the efficiency of responses to critical fire emergencies.

AD02 Alex King Nartey, a spokesperson from the Public Relations Department, shed light on the alarming situation in a recent interview with Joynews on Monday, December 26, 2023.

In the interview, Nartey highlighted some disturbing instances, including perverted individuals engaging in inappropriate behavior by masturbating to the voices of female representatives on the call lines.

This shocking revelation underscores the gravity of the issue at hand and the urgent need to address such malicious activities affecting the service’s essential functions.

Within a span of just one month in the current year, the Fire Service received an astonishingly high count of over 600,000 prank calls. Nartey went on to share some absurd and preposterous details about the content of these calls, ranging from individuals singing on the line to bizarre complaints about the supposed genital-related emergencies of their partners.

The officer emphasized the serious implications of such prank calls on the Fire Service’s ability to effectively carry out its firefighting duties. He explained that the callers, whether intentionally or not, tie up the phone lines, preventing legitimate emergency calls from getting through and potentially delaying critical responses to real crises.

Nartey also highlighted the disturbing trend of children being left unsupervised with phones and using them to call the center, often resorting to insults directed at the representatives. This not only poses a challenge to the professionalism and morale of the service’s personnel but also adds another layer to the complexity of managing the call center effectively.

“Please avoid prank calls because, within just one month in this year, we received over 600,000 prank calls.

“If I tell you some of the silly things, they say you would be surprised. People call and as an excuse to say, some people even masturbate on our call lines. That’s the truth. People call and when they hear the voice of female reps then you hear them jerking off. Those are preposterous things,” he revealed.

He revealed that there are times when children left with phones without supervision also call the centre and heap insults on the representatives.

The officer noted some of the implications such calls have on the discharge of effective firefighting duties by the service. He said
“You see when you do that, you are on the line and you are holding the line, it is just like your mobile phone, it’s like someone is holding the line. You can’t pick another call. So when there is someone there or playing pranks with us, then there is the possibility of denying another person.”

In response to this escalating issue, the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, Tema Regional Command, Divisional Officer III Ebenezer Yenzu, had previously issued a notice in August of the same year.

Yenzu warned that individuals making prank calls would be actively tracked down and arrested, emphasizing the criminal nature of such actions, which could lead to imprisonment.

The Fire Service’s plea to the public is that they should refrain from making prank calls to the emergency line to ensure that genuine emergencies receive the prompt attention they require.

The disruptive nature of these calls not only undermines the crucial services provided by the Fire Service but also jeopardizes public safety in real emergencies. It is a call for responsible and considerate use of emergency services to safeguard the well-being of the entire community.
