A Foreign Policy and Security Analyst, Adib Sani, said public office holders do not need Military guards.

His comment follows withdrawal of four military personnel detailed to the office of the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, by the Ghana Armed Forces.

A letter signed by the Chief of Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces, Major General NP Andoh said, the four officers did not go through the right processes before being attached to the Speaker’s office. The officers include WO1 Jafaru Bunwura, WOII Apugiba Awine David, S/Sgt Agbley Prosper and Sgt. Bonney Prince.

“It is humbly requested that the personnel are withdrawn with effect from 14 January 2022 while efforts are made to regularize their attachment,” The statement said.

In an interview on Atinka FM’s AM Drive, Adib Sani stated that the use of military to guard public service holders is incorrect.

According to him, the military should only be used when the Police requests for the services of the military in areas they deem fit.

“The whole Speaker and withdrawal of military officers issue is shrouded in confusion. As a security person, I have always opposed the use of military as security personnel for public service holders”.

“Aside the President, Vice President and the Minister for Defense, all other public office holders do not need Military guards,” Adib Sani told Kaakyire Ofori Ayim, host of the show.

Meanwhile, the former Speaker of Parliament Rev. Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye has refuted claims suggesting he was provided military protection during his tenure of office.

In a statement he issued, countering accusing fingers pointed at him, he said “I wish to categorically state that this is palpably false. I was never offered military protection nor did I request for any indeed, I had only three policemen to move with me and provide security at all material times. This information can be easily verified by anyone who cares for the truth at the office of the Clerk -to-Parliament at any given time.”

He lastly added, “I will pray that my name is left out of this media discourse on military protection and call upon all discerning Ghanaians to disregard any misleading reportage on same.”
