Dr. John Ofori-Tenkorang, the Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), has revealed an important update, stating that all SSNIT contributors can now obtain a National Health Insurance (NHIS) card at no cost.
Dr. Ofori-Tenkorang clarified that SSNIT contributors do not need to pay any premiums to enroll in the NHIS. In certain cases, a nominal administrative fee may be required, but the necessary premium expenses are covered by SSNIT itself.
To ensure seamless access to healthcare services without any additional charges, the 11 percent monthly deduction from the earnings of SSNIT contributors has been allocated to cover the NHIS premium.
This significant announcement was made during an interview with Odehyeeba Kofi Essuman, the host of the Ghana Yensom morning show on Accra 100.5 FM, on August 30, 2023.
Dr. Ofori-Tenkorang urged all SSNIT contributors, as well as new subscribers, to assert their rights and take advantage of this entitlement when registering for their NHIS cards. He emphasized that the registration process for SSNIT contributors onto the NHIS registry is completely free of charge.
Also , he assured that SSNIT contributors will be seamlessly integrated into the NHIS registry without incurring any fees. He encouraged SSNIT subscribers to consistently follow these established protocols during the NHIS card registration process.
The Director-General also highlighted the specific benefits available based on contributors’ years of service. Those who have faithfully contributed for 15 years are eligible for a premium coverage of 37.5 percent, while individuals with an impressive 35 years of contribution are entitled to an even higher premium coverage of 60 percent.
