The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has issued a stern warning, asserting that it will not acknowledge any individual who does not identify as an integral part of the teaching community to assume leadership roles concerning teachers across the nation.

This declaration follows a strike undertaken by three teacher unions, demanding the removal of Dr. Eric Nkansah, a banking professional, from his position as the appointed Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES). The teacher unions took this action after the government failed to meet their ultimatum regarding the reversal of Dr. Nkansah’s appointment.

During the launch event of the 2023 Ghana Teacher Prize, Angel Carbonu, President of NAGRAT, underlined the union’s stance, emphasizing that such appointments would not be tolerated in the future.

“We will promptly bring this matter before the Minister to understand why certain individuals believe they can’t belong to our teaching community, yet feel empowered to oversee those of us who are a part of it. It’s a simple choice: either you align yourself with us or you pursue your other affiliations. The next time a comparable situation arises, we will make it absolutely clear that we will not cooperate with anyone who declines to be an integral part of this teaching fraternity. Just as I wouldn’t presume to supervise the work of a medical doctor or a nurse in a hospital,” stated Angel Carbonu.
