Tertiary Students to get Loans without Guarantors – Dr. Bawumia

The Vice President of the Republic of Ghana H.E Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has promised that, all Tertiary Students in any accredited public institution in Ghana shall be given the option to apply and obtain a student loan without the requirement of a guarantor.

Speaking at the New Patriotic Party 2020 Manifesto Launch at the University of Cape Coast in the Central Region, on 22nd August, 2020, the Vice President added that, the decision is to consolidate the implementation of the Free SHS and Free TVET programme in the country’s educational system.

Beneficiaries of the Student Loan

Explaining further, the Vice President said,  the Student Loan system shall exclude Teacher Trainees from the Colleges of Education and Nurses Trainees from Nursing Colleges who are already receiving government allowances.

Requirements for accessing the Loan.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia again said, the eligibility requirements for accessing the student loan shall be National ID and or Ghana Card.

Mode of Payment

The Vice President also said, when students secure the loan, they shall defer repayment to after National Service plus an additional one year grace period.

“All tertiary students (except teacher and nurse trainees receiving allowances) will get the option to obtain a student loan without the requirement of a guarantor, provided he or she has a National ID/Ghana Card, defer repayment to after National Service plus an additional one year grace period” He explained.
