The Untold Life Journey of Professor (Mrs) Rita Akosua Dickson

In the realm of academia, Professor (Mrs) Rita Akosua Dickson has carved an indelible path as an exceptional scholar and visionary leader. Serving as the Vice Chancellor of the prestigious Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and being recognized as the 2023 Global Best Vice Chancellor in terms of SDG4, her journey to success is an inspiration to many.

Born and raised in Ghana, Professor Dickson’s pursuit of knowledge began at St. Monica’s Secondary School in Mampong-Ashanti, where she completed her GCE Ordinary Level examinations. She then furthered her education at Wesley Girls’ High School in Cape Coast, excelling in her GCE Advanced Level examinations.

Her academic journey led her to KNUST, where she obtained a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy in 1994. Fuelled by her passion for the field, she pursued an MPharm in pharmacognosy at the same university, which she completed in 1999. Seeking to expand her horizons, Professor Dickson embarked on a Ph.D. program in pharmacology at King’s College London, which she successfully completed in 2007.

Returning to her alma mater, KNUST, in the year 2000, Professor Dickson began her career as a lecturer. Her dedication to teaching and research quickly earned her recognition, and she was granted an opportunity to pursue further studies in the United Kingdom. In 2007, she returned to Ghana and resumed her role as a lecturer at KNUST. Her expertise and contributions to the field led to her promotion to senior lecturer in 2009, followed by her appointment as an associate professor in 2014.

Professor Dickson’s leadership skills and commitment to education were evident throughout her career. In September 2018, she made history as the first female to hold the position of pro-vice chancellor at KNUST. Prior to this, she served as the esteemed dean of the faculty of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences. Her impact extended beyond KNUST, as she also served as a board member of the Pharmacy Council and Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana.

On 25 June 2020, the KNUST community celebrated the appointment of Professor Rita Akosua Dickson as the university’s first female Vice Chancellor. Taking office on 1 August 2020, she embarked on a momentous four-year term leading one of Africa’s premier institutions of higher learning.

Apart from her administrative achievements, Professor Dickson has made significant contributions to the field of phytochemistry. Her research focuses on bioactive natural products and their applications in the management of both communicable and non-communicable diseases. Her work in this area has the potential to transform healthcare practices and improve the well-being of individuals worldwide.
