Trends of electricity tariff increases and adjustments
Coverghana.com.gh has conducted a research into electricity tariff fluctuations in the country and has therefore uncovered the trends of electricity tariff increases and adjustments from 2010 to 2022.
This follows after the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced the approved tariff increments for water and electricity effective September 1, 2022.
According to the PURC, water tariff and electricity tariff proposals from the Ghana Water Company Limited and Electricity Company of Ghana respectively have been adjusted at reduced percentages. The statement from PURC has confirmed 21.55% water tariff and electricity tariff of 27.15% for all consumers.
Meanwhile the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) had demanded 148% increase in tariff while Ghana Water Company Limited also demanded 334% increase in tariff.
A critical look at the tariff structure as announced reveals that all residential consumers who falls between 0-300 kWh bracket have witnessed a price increase from GHp/kWh 65.4161 to GHp/kWh89.0422, representing an increment of almost 34%.
It should be noted that the bulk of residential consumers fall within the 0-300 kWh bracket and will therefore be adversely affected by the 34% adjustment.
Explaining that, the PURC said, in balancing interests of the service providers and consumers, the PURC acknowledged that the very economic variables that have occasioned the steep increases proposed by the service providers also affect the consumers.
The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), however, admitted that some level of increases in utility tariffs were inevitable if the nation was to avoid another power crisis and its attendant effects including job losses.
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) loses about GHS3.2 billion to power theft by consumers and other operational loses.
