UCC Atlantic Hall management/staff/students consultative meeting, 2023
Management of the Atlantic Hall (ATL) of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) held its management, staff and students consultative meeting on Wednesday, 28th June, 2023 at the Hall’s multipurpose quadrangle.
The highly productive and engaging meeting, brought together students, JCRC executives, hall officials, alumni and distinguished guests to discuss important matters concerning the well-being and development of the hall.
The gathering, presided over by the esteemed Hall Master, Dr. Daniel Apaak, touched on various issues of significance to the hall’s community especially Mariners.
The meeting commenced with a captivating cadet display by the Morrouway Naval Cadet, capturing the attention of all affiliates and attendees. The opening remark was delivered by Miss Doreen Serwaa Oduro, who introduced the esteemed chairman, Dr. Daniel Apaak, the Hall Master.
The purpose of the gathering was outlined by the Senior Hall Tutor, Dr. Francis K. Andoh, emphasizing the importance of open communication and collective efforts in creating a conducive living and learning environment within the hall.
Some issues discussed at ATL management/staff/student consultative meeting
Hall Master, Dr. Daniel Apaak
The meeting proceeded with an extensive discussion led by the Hall Master, addressing several vital issues affecting the students community. One notable aspect was the presentation on the rules and relegations governing students, as detailed in the Students’ Handbook. These regulations play a crucial role in ensuring discipline, respect, and a sense of responsibility among the students.
The hall master also outlined the do’s and don’ts in the hall thereby focusing attention on notice and adverts pasted on doors, selling in rooms, noise making, perching and security. He again addressed assault cases in the hall and promised to strictly enforce rules and regulations in that regards.
He cautioned students who consistently inconvenience other fellow room mates by bring in the opposite sex among others to desist from that.
Addressing issues of enforcing security of Mariners, the hall master explained that, time of returning to the hall at night will be regulated by the security. According to him, after 11:00pm, the main ATL gate will be closed by the security, and any student returning to the hall would have to show a proof of identity before he/she is allowed into the hall.
Dr. Daniel Apaak reiterated that, any student who violates the rules and regulations of the University will face the law appropriately.
Mrs. Faustina Quayson, Presiding Hall Assistant
Mrs Faustina Quayson, the Presiding Hall Assistant, took the floor to enlighten affiliate of the hall on the significance of filling various books at the hall’s enquiry. She highlighted the importance of the complaints book, redeat book, exeat book, and visitors’ book, stressing their role in maintaining order, addressing concerns, and tracking hall activities especially security.
Additionally, Mrs Faustina Quayson emphasized the importance of cleanliness in the hall and the collective responsibility of all residents to uphold high standards of hygiene and rule of law.
The Senior Hall Tutor, Dr. Francis K. Andoh
The Senior Hall Tutor, Dr. Francis K. Andoh in his address, shed light on the upcoming Student Representative Council (SRC) and Junior Common Room Committee (JCRC) elections. He encouraged active student participation, promoting the importance of a democratic process and fostering student leadership within the hall. Moreover, the accommodation issues in the hall were discussed, addressing concerns related to annex/room allocation and rent payment of Mariners.
An interactive question-and-answer session allowed students to voice their concerns and seek clarifications, with management providing satisfactory responses and reassurances.
Open forum
Mariners were given the opportunity to ask questions and also bring out challenges affecting them. A level hundred Bsc. Physics Student, Nicholas Kelvin Agboni points out key issues that need critical attention in the hall. He admonished management of the hall to fix the hall’s power supply/plant/generator to augment ECG’s power supply. Agboni also proposed re-introduction of hall suggestions box, repositioning and extension of CCTV cameras across all corners of the hall, enactment of by-laws and rearrangement of keys collection system at the porter’s lodge. He also suggested relocation of the Public Address System from the hall’s library.
Other students appealed to management to reconsider the new policy at the ATL annex. Some indicted that, management must make provision in terms of accommodation for persons living with disability, including mass renovation in the hall especially, the washrooms.
The Hall President, Vincent Kojo Siabi
The Hall President Vincent Kojo Siabi took the opportunity to deliver a brief speech, expressing gratitude to Mariners and highlighting the importance of unity and cooperation. He appealed to the hall management to show key interest on challenges confronting students in the hall. He again called on management to help improve the networks system in the hall.
ATL Chief Justice, His Lordship Adom Wisdom
The ATL Chief Justice, His Lordship Adom Wisdom spoke about the recently updated constitution, highlighting the hall’s commitment to maintaining a fair and just environment for all Mariners.
Presentation of trophy by the JCRC (Debate Society)
The meeting also featured the presentation of a trophy by the JCRC Debate Society, a moment of pride and recognition for the outstanding achievements of the hall’s talented debaters. This served as a reminder of the hall’s commitment to academic excellence and the cultivation of intellectual skills among Mariner.
Closing remarks and vote of thanks
The Chairman, Dr. Daniel Apark, delivered the closing remarks by reassuring students that, every concern brought out will be discussed and addressed by management of the hall.
The Atlantic Hall holds its management/staff/student consultative meeting was graced by Ms. Sallly Ackon – Hall Bassar, Dr. Prinkan – Hall Tutor (in charge of), Dr. Vicent Asampah -Hall Tutor (), Dr. Francis AzabaH, Dr. Daniel Apark – Hall Master, Mr. Dickem Mkle – Administrator, Mrs Faustina Quayson – Presiding Hall Assistant, Ebenezer Sacket and JCRC executives.
The consultative meeting was Emceed by Barbara Nti Nkansah, a level 200 hundred BEd. Science student of UCC and proud Mariner.
Brief background of UCC Atlantic Hall (ATL)
The bungalows were later demolished in early 1963/64 to clear grounds for the construction of Atlantic Hall. By the close of 1963/64 academic year, the Atlantic Hall had been allowed a number of continuing students proceeding to the final year to occupy the hall.
Prior to the development, students who came later on were housed in one of the two-storey buildings just behind the dining hall (now VOTEC Kitchen Restaurant) and were referred to as students of Hall
The storey building is now part of the Faculty of Education, the Faculty’s Library, Conference groom and the offices of FAMU Doctoral Invitation Programme. As Hall 2 and purely all-male hall, they took on the youthful students and they were the loudest in temperament of males on campus.
As a result of their actions, the hall was later turned into a unisex hall. On 10/01/1969, students of Hall 2 voted unanimously for the adoption of a new “name ATLANTIC HALL. Today, the hall can boast of being the only hall on campus from which the Atlantic Ocean can be viewed. Residents of the hall are known as Mariners.
