University of Ghana initiates laptop assembly plant to enhance student access

The University of Ghana, Legon, is taking a significant step to enhance students’ access to laptops by initiating the establishment of a laptop assembly plant on campus. Contracts have been awarded for this project, aiming to provide students with affordable laptops through highly competitive pricing.
Under the One Student, One Laptop initiative, the university has already distributed 309 laptops to students since August 2022. Additionally, the institution, with support from individuals and corporate entities, has donated 500 laptops to students facing financial constraints.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, made this announcement during a congregational ceremony for the School of Graduate Studies in Accra.

The university has been committed to inclusivity, evident in its provision of basic ICT training for seven visually impaired students.
This initiative, carried out in collaboration with the International Telecommunications Union and the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications, was conducted at the University’s Assistive Technology Lab. The goal is to enhance the educational experience and prepare students for the challenges of the digital workplace.
Moreover, the University of Ghana-Toyota Ghana School of Engineering Sciences Training Centre was commissioned in October 2023. This facility aligns with the university’s dedication to preparing students for the job market.
Toyota Ghana has pledged $2 million worth of engineering equipment over ten years to support the training of the university’s engineering students. In addition, Toyota Ghana donated a 33-seater Toyota Coaster bus to enhance student mobility.
To improve access to student accommodation, the university introduced an open randomized bed allocation system. This system aims to ensure fairness and transparency in bed allocation, providing students with an equal opportunity for room assignment, regardless of their internet connectivity status.
During the ceremony, Mr. Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, Senior Partner at KPMG Ghana, urged the graduates to be ambassadors of positive change.

He emphasized the importance of thinking, dreaming, and acting positively to achieve success in life. The graduates were encouraged to be intentional in making positive contributions to society and to utilize their acquired knowledge for the betterment of the country and beyond.
Dr. John Boiquaye, the best graduating student from the School of Graduate Studies, expressed gratitude to the university for the honor and pledged to use the knowledge gained to benefit humanity.
Graduating with a total grade point average of 3.90 in his PhD in Mathematics, Dr. Boiquaye highlighted the key elements of success as patience, perseverance, and dedication.
