UPSA honors three exceptional women for unparalleled contributions to Ghana

University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), is set to host its fifth Session of the 15th Congregation on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at the esteemed Kofi Ohene-Konadu Auditorium (KOKA) at 9:30 a.m. This momentous occasion will witness the conferral of honorary doctorate degrees upon some exceptional women who have made significant contributions to Ghana through their unwavering dedication to their professions and public service.

The recipients of these prestigious honorary doctorate degrees are esteemed individuals whose accomplishments have spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on Ghanaian society.

Her Excellency Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, the founder of The Rebecca Foundation is one the . Mrs. Akufo-Addo is being recognized for her exceptional visionary ideas and lifelong dedication to enhancing the well-being of women and children’s health and education in Ghana. Through The Rebecca Foundation, she has positively impacted countless lives, transforming destinies and building brighter futures.

Mrs. Akufo-Addo’s passion for efficient healthcare led her to mobilize corporate Ghana through The Rebecca Foundation, resulting in the construction and commissioning of a new Pediatric and Intensive Care Unit at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra in 2019. Additionally, she launched the “Free to Shine” campaign, dedicated to preventing mother-to-child transmission of AIDS. This initiative aligns with the Organization of African First Ladies’ campaign against HIV and AIDS.

In the same year, The Rebecca Foundation established the “Save the Child, Save the Mother” project at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi. This project encompasses a Mother and Baby Unit (MBU) and a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), aimed at reducing maternal and infant mortality rates. The initiative received support from various stakeholders, including the Multimedia Group, KATH, Manhyia Palace, and the Government of Japan, among others.

The second recipient of the honorary doctorate degree is Rt. Hon. Justice Adeline Bamford-Addo, a distinguished figure who served as the former Speaker of Parliament. Her professional and remarkable service in Ghana’s public sector, particularly in the judiciary and legislature, is being honored. Justice Bamford-Addo’s vast experience and expertise have made her a trailblazer in both fields, setting high standards for others to follow.

Her contributions to the drafting and implementation of key legislation have had a lasting impact on Ghana’s legal framework. Throughout her career, she has consistently shown unwavering dedication to upholding the principles of justice, fairness, and the rule of law.

The third distinguished woman to be recognized with an honorary doctorate degree is yet to be announced by the University.

The University of Professional Studies, Accra, takes immense pride in conferring these honorary doctorate degrees on these exceptional women who have demonstrated unparalleled commitment to their professions and public service.
