The Fellows and Members of the Ghana Chapter of the West African College of Surgeons and the Ghana Medical Association have issued a press statement warning the general public to avoid using face shield without nose mask as a mean of protecting the novel coronavirus.
According to the Associations, the act is very dangerous and may rather lead to an increasing rate of positive cases since the face shield does not solely protect one from being infected by the virus.
In a joint press release from Ghana Medical Association (GMA) and the West African College of Surgeons (Ghana Chapter), the use of fave shield without nose mask must be discontinued by the general public with immediate effect.
In the joint statement, the general public is therefore advised by the Associations to immediately continue to use the nose mask at all time as one of the Coronavirus safety protocols.
“The use of Face Shields alone (without a face mask) does not give the user the needed protection against COVID-19 especially in the light of potential air borne spread of the virus from emerging scientific evidence.”
They further explained that, the Face shields only protect one from splashes, hence it must not be used as replacement for the approved face mask.
