[VIDEO] Four fire officers who a two-storey building collapsed on while extinguishing an inferno at West Legon

In a harrowing incident yesterday, two fire officers are now in critical condition after a two-storey building collapsed on them during a fire extinguishing operation in West Legon, within the Ga East Municipality. Additionally, four officers of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) sustained various degrees of injury in the unfortunate incident.

The fire outbreak occurred on Wednesday afternoon, causing significant damage to offices located on the first floor of the building. Promptly responding to the emergency, the GNFS team based in Legon swiftly arrived at the scene. Recognizing the intensity of the fire, they requested reinforcements from Abelempke and Madina to bolster their efforts.

Assistant Divisional Officer Alex King Nartey from the Public Relations Department of GNFS provided details about the incident. He stated, “The fire incident happened this afternoon (Wednesday). When it happened, our team at Legon responded to the fire, and upon arriving at the fireground, they realized that the fire was ablaze, so they had to call for reinforcement from Abelempke and Madina to augment their efforts. However, due to the fact that buildings, when subject to fires, tend to lose some structural integrity.”

He explained, “So the beam broke, collapsing on the firefighters, and they fell into the fire with the beam lying on them. Consequently, four of them sustained injuries of various degrees, while two are in critical condition, receiving medical attention.”

The injured firefighters were swiftly taken to a medical facility for urgent treatment. The GNFS and relevant authorities are actively investigating the incident to determine the cause of the fire as well as the circumstances leading to the building’s collapse.
