What is National Labour Commission NLC?

The National Labour Commission of Ghanaian is a governmental organization which operates with the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651) of the 1992 constitution in focus.

The National Labour Commission is to develop and sustain a peaceful and harmonious industrial relations environment through the use of effective dispute resolution practices within the co-operation among the labour market players and mutual respect for their rights and responsibilities.

It is a body that regulates and negotiates for the various labour unions in the country by working hand in hand with the union Heads and the employers (Government). To wit, the commission is there to serve the interest of the labour unions.

The Commission also becomes the mediator between the Government and leadership of workers unions in instances where there are issues affecting the Ghanaian workers.

Mostly the commission acts as a settlement party between the two opposing groups by mediating and facilitating dialogue sessions to ensure a consensus.

It is currently headed by Chairperson, Justice Kwabena Asuman Adu. Aside the security forces in the country (that is the Armed Forces, the Police Service, the Prison Service), the National Labour Commission works for and with all the other government agencies and offices.

Even though it is a government agency, it has the sole purpose of ensuring reasonable and satisfying negotiations for the labour unions after every settlement.
