In her recently released book, ‘I Am Not Yvonne Nelson,’ renowned actress Yvonne Nelson opens up about a deeply personal and painful experience—the decision to terminate a pregnancy.
The book exposes the circumstances surrounding her choice, shedding light on the struggles she faced as a young woman confronted with an unsupportive partner and the weight of fatherlessness.
According to Nelson, the incident occurred in 2010 and involved a rapper based in Tema. In her narrative, she discloses that the man in question was Sarkodie, now a celebrated Ghanaian musician and multiple award winner.
She recounts the moment when she learned she was pregnant. In the company of her friend Karen, she took a pregnancy test and was unable to bring herself to open the results. Karen took charge and revealed the news, exclaiming, “Charlie, it dey there!”
The actress shares the complexities of the situation, describing her relationship with Sarkodie as not particularly serious but one that developed due to their shared love for music. At the time, Sarkodie was still striving for success and was not ready to bear the responsibilities of fatherhood.
Chapter 8 of Nelson’s memoir describes her attempt to terminate the pregnancy by using concoctions recommended by a colleague. However, to her dismay, the substances proved ineffective as subsequent tests revealed that she was still pregnant.
Nelson’s decision to terminate the pregnancy stemmed from her own fatherless upbringing. She did not want to bring another child into the world whose father would refuse to accept responsibility, as she had experienced firsthand.
Reflecting on her choice, she writes, “The first thing that hit me when he said no to keeping the pregnancy was my own life. I had grown up without a father… I was still wondering if the man whose name I bore was my father.”
Eventually, Nelson succeeded in terminating the pregnancy, but she regards it as one of the most regrettable mistakes of her life. Looking back, she expresses remorse and acknowledges that, if given the chance, she would make a different decision.
