The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abdulai Jinapor says burning of excavators still remain the best option under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government.
Explaining the need to restore the country’s depleting vegetative cover at a press briefing, the Minister has justified why the burning of escalators which are being used in illegal mining “Galamsey” operation still remain the best option of the New Patriotic Party government.
He explained that, there are several laws in Ghana’s constitution that permits President to adopt several measures to deal with situations that would undermine the right, the life and the peace of the citizens.
Samuel Abudlai Jinapor categorically stated that, the decision of the New Patriotic Party government to burn mining equipment including the excavators would not cost any Judgement debt in the future.
The Minister’s response came up when he was answering an urgent question filed by the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on the legal and policy justification for the burning of excavators in the ongoing fight against illegal small scale mining (Galamsey).
