Carlos Humberto Santana Barragán is an American guitarist who rose to prominence with his band Santana in the late 1960s and early 1970s, pioneering a synthesis of rock & roll and Latin American jazz.
Santana became a naturalized US citizen in 1965. His lyrical, blues-based melodies were set against Latin American and African rhythms played on percussion instruments not commonly heard in rock, such as timbales and congas.
In the late 1990s, he witnessed a spike in popularity and critical praise. Rolling Stone magazine ranked him No. 20 on their list of the 100 best guitarists in 2015.
He has received ten Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards, and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, together with his eponymous band.
Santana was influenced by prominent artists of the 1950s like B.B. King, T-Bone Walker, Javier Batiz, and John Lee Hooker.
Soon after starting to play guitar, he joined local bands along the “Tijuana Strip,” where he was able to establish his unique sound.
He was also exposed to new musical influences, such as jazz and folk music, and watched the blossoming hippie movement centered in San Francisco in the 1960s.
After several years of working as a dishwasher at Tic Tock Drive-In No2 and busking to pay for a Gibson SG to replace a destroyed Gibson Melody Maker, Santana decided to become a full-time musician.
