Cooperate with census officials for credible data collection – Ablakwa tells Constituents

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu Constituency Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has urged everyone in his Constituency to avail themselves to be enumerated/counted during the nationwide 2021 Population and Housing Census.
Speaking at the Census Night, a ceremony organized by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) to mark the reference point of this year’s Enumeration at Battor, the District Capital of North Tongu, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa appealed to his Constituents to cooperate with the Census officials to help them collect credible data for scientific evidence-based development.

Mr. Ablakwa, while addressing the people said, this year’s exercise is very unique and there’s a need to capture every Ghanain who spent the Census Night in Ghana.
He believes that, 2021 Population and Housing Census exercise, when completed, will provide a broader data on the North Tongu Constituency and Ghana for effective policy decisions making towards its development.

On 27th June, 2021, the Ghana Statistical Service has organized a nationwide Census Night to serve as a reference point for the ongoing 2021 Population and Housing Census across the country.
The Census Night was marked with key activities such as Brass Band and Spinning, Tolling of Church bells, Azan from Mosques, Traditional Drumming, Cultural and film shows, Lightening of bon fires etc.
GSS begins 2021 Census; Sends vital notice to Enumerators and Supervisors
This followed after the commencement of the first part of the exercise thus; chalking and listing which began on 13th June, 2021.
The Census Night is the night of 27th/28th June 2021. All persons in Ghana on the Census Night will be enumerated from 28th June 2021 in reference to where they spend the Census Night.
During the Census Night, some group of persons were enumerated. These specific groups of persons. These persons include;
1. Persons who were in transit (long distance traveler will be counted at major transit points such as lorry stations)
2. Persons who slept in the open in front of stores markets, offices, on pavements, etc.
3. Persons who spent the Census night in short stay institutions such as hotels and guest houses.

WHY IT IS NECESSARY TO CONDUCT THE CENSUS?
1. The Census provides updated statistical data to support national development activities, including Planning budgeting and effective policy.
2. The Census will provide information at the locality district, regional and national levels.
3. The Census information will also be useful for businesses, media, academia, research institutions, and international organizations as the basis for informed decision-making for better economic growth and development outcomes.
DOES THE CENSUS HAVE A LEGAL BACKING?
2021 Population and Housing Census: All tribes will be registered – GSS
YES! Clause 34 of the Statistical Service Act 2019 (ACT 1003) mandates GSS to conduct the Census and Clause 54 of the Act, compels everyone in Ghana to provide Information to the Census Officials.
