EC announces date to compile the controversial new voter’s register
The Electoral Commission of Ghana is ready with the compilation of a new voters’ register for the 2020 general elections. This exercise has been one the topical issues in the country for the past few months.
Civil society groups, such as IMANI Africa, IES, opposition political parties, Chiefs and others have called on the EC led by Mrs. Jean Mensa not to compile a new register of voters for the 2020 election but the Jean Mensa led EC has decided not to comply.

On Tuesday 9th June, 2020, 106 majority Members in Parliament voted for the compilation of the new register against 92 minority Members of Parliament.
They also agreed that, the Ghana cards and passport should be used as eligibility requirements for the compilation of the new voter’s register.
In a letter circulating on social media, it was shown that, the Electoral Commission has started writing to various political parties informing them on the commencement of the registration.

In a letter issued by the Electoral Commission signed by the Deputy Chairman of EC in charge of Corporate Services, Bossman Eric Asare PHD on 8th June, 2020, stated that the registration exercise will commence on 30th June, 2020. It also indicated that, the exercise will take place at all centres across the country.
