Fully Funded PhD Programmes in Educational Studies at Boston University
The Boston University Wheelock College of Education & Human Development offers a fully funded PhD program in Educational Studies.
This program is designed for students who are interested in contributing to the field’s understanding of teaching and learning through research.
The PhD in Educational Studies provides students with a strong foundation in research methods and the theoretical and conceptual frameworks of current educational research.
Throughout the program, students engage with a community of fellow students and faculty scholars within the college and across the university.
The PhD in Educational Studies prepares students for careers as research-active faculty in R1 institutions, with a focus on research in one of four areas of specialization: Educational Policy Studies, Language & Literacy Education, Math & Science Education, and Special Education.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the PhD in Educational Studies, applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree or be on track to complete a bachelor’s degree at the time of application.
PhD Funding Coverage
Students admitted to the PhD in Educational Studies program will receive full funding for a period of five years, with the expectation that they will complete the PhD within this timeframe. The maximum duration for completing the program is seven years.
Part-time enrollment is not available for this program. Students work closely with BU Wheelock faculty as research and teaching assistants, enhancing their knowledge and skills through coursework, residency, and research.

Statement of Qualifications & Objectives:
Write a statement that outlines your research background, field of study, and motivation for pursuing a PhD. Describe specific research topics or questions you wish to explore during your doctoral study. Additionally, include information about BU Wheelock faculty and projects that align with your research goals.
Equity & Inclusion Statement:
Boston University Wheelock College of Education & Human Development emphasizes equity, access, inclusion, and social justice. Include a statement (maximum two double-spaced pages) that explains how your characteristics, outlook, and experiences will contribute to creating a more equitable and just world.
Résumé/Curriculum Vitae:
Submit a résumé or curriculum vitae (CV) that summarizes your relevant job experiences and education. You may also include information about relevant activities, awards, and interests. There is no specific format required for résumés or CVs.
Transcripts:
Upload unofficial transcripts from all the colleges or universities you have attended. Acceptable unofficial transcripts include official copies that have been opened and scanned, degree progress reports, or electronic transcript screenshots.
Letters of Recommendation:
Provide two letters of recommendation with your application. While you may submit more than two letters, it is not mandatory. Letters should come from instructors, direct supervisors, or individuals who can accurately assess your skills and abilities.
English Proficiency:
If English is not your first language and you have not previously earned a degree from an institution where English was the primary language of instruction, you may need to submit official test scores demonstrating your English proficiency.
Analytical Essay (optional):
Write an essay that identifies key arguments on a current educational or social issue in your field. Include your analysis, conclusions, and references that inform your understanding. The essay can be a newly written work or a previously written essay. There is no specific length requirement.
Optional Essay:
You may submit an additional essay to bring any information to the attention of the Admissions Committee. If you are reapplying to a BU Wheelock program, you can use this essay to discuss how your application has changed or improved since your last application.
Application Fee:
Degree program applicants are required to pay a nonrefundable application fee of $95. Non-degree applications require a $25 fee.
Application Deadline
The application deadline for the PhD in Educational Studies program is December 1st.
