GES announces new contact hours for Basic Schools

Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has reviewed its directive on the opening and closing time for Public Basic Schools as contained in the Common Core Programme (CCP) Curriculum used for Junior High School (JHS) teachers curriculum workshop.

According to Prof. Kwesi Opoku-Amankwa led Ghana Education Service, the new contact hours for Basic Schools aside what was captured in CCP Curriculum is reviewed.

The notice said, the new reviewed started/opening and closing schools are as follow;

A. From 7:30am to 2:30pm

B. From 8:00 am to 3:00pm

According to Management of the Ghana Education Service, there is a total of one (1) hour break for every school.

GES further said, Districts and Schools may start either at 7:30am or 8:00am depending on the peculiar situation within the community.

Earlier, a there was a communication from GES through its curriculum trainers/facilitators to teachers during the JHS curriculum workshop. The information as communicated earlier said, schools shall open either from 7:00am to 3:30pm or from 7:30am to 4:00pm or 8:00am to 4:30pm as stated in the CCP Curriculum.

But the GES new directed said, the above starting/opening and closing time for schools as announced earlier have been reviewed as, from 7:30am to 2:30pm or From 8:00 am to 3:00pm.

According to the information, schools may not have one specific opening and closing time but the opening and closing time of schools shall be determined by every school management in collaboration with their District/Municipal/Metropolitan Directorates of GES.

This implies that, school A may start/open school at 7:30am and closes at 2:30pm while school B may open school at 8:00am and closes at 3:00pm.

Teacher Unions direct GES to withdraw 2022 Semester Academic Calendar

The opening/starting time for schools, according to the Ghana Education Service is the time a lesson begin while the closing time is when a lesson end on the school level timetable.
