GES commiserates with bereaved families of drowned students

The Ghana Education Service (GES) is devastated by the news of a tragic boat accident that resulted in the loss of twelve pupils and a dedicated teacher. On Wednesday, 10th May 2023, the students, five from Services Awareness Academy and seven from Redeemer Academy, were returning home from school in Wiaboman, Weija Gbawe Municipality.

Around 4:30 pm, their boat was struck by powerful tidal waves, causing it to capsize during the journey to Faana in the Ga South Municipality. Sadly, nine lives were lost, including seven girls and two boys aged between two and ten years old.

In a related development, Mr. Sampson Adu, a 29-year-old teacher from Chinekope M/A Primary School in Krachi West Municipality, also met his untimely death in the same boat accident. Mr. Adu has been laid to rest in his hometown in the Eastern Region.

The GES expresses its deepest condolences to the bereaved families during this difficult time. The service stands in solidarity with them, offering support and prayers. The incident serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of implementing stringent safety measures, particularly in student transportation.

The GES will collaborate with relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident and identify measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of all students.
