Ghana Association of University Administrators begins nationwide strike

The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has initiated a nationwide strike to protest what it perceives as a disregard for their conditions of service by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.
Despite an invitation from the National Labour Commission (NLC) for a meeting scheduled on Wednesday, the General Secretary of the association, Richard Afriyie, confirmed that the strike would commence immediately.

“We have instructed our members to suspend their work until further notice. The strike is commencing today as planned. While we have been asked to appear before the NLC to discuss the matter on Wednesday, we have yet to attend the meeting and understand the potential outcomes. We cannot simply call off the strike based on opinions or emotions. It is a collective decision, and we must adhere to it,” stated Afriyie.
The GAUA is demanding improved conditions of service, which it believes have been neglected by the relevant authorities. The strike serves as a means to draw attention to their concerns and to push for meaningful negotiations and resolutions.
The association’s decision to proceed with the strike indicates their commitment to address the issue and highlights the urgency they feel in achieving a satisfactory outcome. The GAUA emphasizes the need for a collective effort to find a resolution that meets the expectations of its members.
