Sculpture UCC campus: Statue at Graeco at a glance
The statue at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Graeco roundabout is another well-known statue situated in a visible place.
The statue shows a male figure wrapped in traditional cloth, peacefully reading a book and holding a staff.
It represents the importance of wisdom acquired through tradition and culture as well as knowledge acquired through academic studies.

The statue is made up of cement and painted to reflect history. The cement (the material made up of the statue) is painted white in the style of marble sculptures of ancient Greece – a reference to the historical roots of the European scholarly traditions.

The figure’s exaggerated features, however, are distinguishably African, referring to the imagery of West African folk art.
In all, the statue is a good example of merging traditions and cross-cultural discourse.
