The Executive Director of African Education Watch Mr. Kofi Asare has disclosed reasons poultry farms are collapsing and laying off labour gradually.
According to him, they have been investigating why many Senior High Schools (SHSs) are not buying eggs in the current regime like previously. He said, they have spoken to large scale egg producers in Kumasi, Ejura, Kwabre and SHS heads on the subject matter to ascertian reasons many Ghanaian poultry farms are collapsing and laying off employees.
Mr. Kofi Asare revealed that, after engaging the above individuals across the country, they confirmed to him that, before the Novel Coronavirus, schools were doing at least 3 eggs a week. This translated into 150,000 crates/week (about 3.6 million pieces of eggs). This made poultry farmers to invest in more layers to sustain the demand from Senior High Schools, while it created jobs and income for many.
He expressed his gratitude to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for creating jobs via free Senior High School Education but in the contrary, he said, the current situation has worsen the plight of the poultry farmers accros the country.
He indicated that, in January this year, an order came form Accra that a certain company has been contracted by government to supply imported Chinese mackerel to all Senior High Schools in Ghana. Apparently, the company had been supplying to Southern schools prior.
Kofi Asare added that, since then, many schools started doing one egg a week. This has reduced the demand for eggs by 70%, and coupled with supply chain disruptions of COVID-19, forced many poultry farmers who had invested in layers to shutting down and lay off labour. The increase in the price of maize only nailed the coffin.
He believes that, some of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s policy decisions are now creating unemployment and poverty, eroding his own achievements, especially in your World Bank Ashanti, the HQ of Ghana Poultry.
“Lets Keep praying for Ghana! This Project is called Project Kwadanda” He said.
