The Executive Director at African Education Watch (EDUWATCH), Mr. Kofi Asare reviewed and commended H.E Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo’s 2021 State of the Nation Address (SONA) on education.

A RAPID REVIEW OF NANA’s 2021 SONA TODAY -EDUCATION
In his first (2021) SONA under the current term, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo committed as follows in the education sector.
1. Increase Gross Tertiary Enrollment Ratio from the current 18.8% to 40% by 2030.
2. Remove the guarantor requirement on students loans through the Student Loan Trust Fund programme.

3. Continue the development of 20 STEM centres and 8 model Science SHSs across the country.

4. Build 32 TVET institutions across the country
5. Commence the implementation of the Ghana Jobs and Skills project this year.
6. Expedite the development of the CBT curricula on the National TVET Qualification Framework for one hundred (100) trades/professions from level one (1) (National Proficiency 1) to level five (5) (Higher National Diploma)
7. Train 25,000 beneficiaries and provide entrepreneurial support to about 50,000 individuals.
8. Implement the Ghana Labour Market Information System, and upgrade of district public employment centres and services.
9. Introduce new measures to curb examination leakages and malpractices.

10. Facilitate the acquisition of 280,000 laptops for members of GNAT, NAGRAT and CCT this year.
11. Detail an action plan for the implementation of the National Teacher Policy.
Assessment in 2023
My rapid output-based assessment gives him a 10/11. With the exception of Number 1, all have been significantly/are being implemented.
On the quality of implementation, an outcome score 70% is modest.
In sum, I believe good progress has been made in respect of the above. Implementation gaps however, require priority attention to address/complete by end of year.
