Upper West Region has unique investment opportunities for Economic Growth – Mireku Duker

The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Hon. George Mireku Duker says Upper West Region has unique investment opportunities for Economic Growth.

Speaking at an inaugural ceremony on Thursday 29th, July 2021, he said it  gives him great pleasure  to perform the important function of inaugurating the Upper West Regional Lands Commission in accordance with Article 260 of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana and the  Lands Commission Act.

While inaugurating an 18 member Lands Commission for the Upper West Region, the Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources added ” Land is both a physical commodity and an abstract concept in that the right to own and use it are as much a part of the land as objects rooted on it’s soil. Stewardship of land  he said,  is essential for the present and future generations, which gives effect by the good old traditional Ghanaian adage that land is for ” the ancestors, the living and generations yet unborn”.

He stated, “The Upper west Region has been identified as having great significance in the national settlements because it shares strategic boundaries with Burkina Faso, and  Cote D’ Voire.

The Region, the Deputy Minister said  has some unique investment potentials in diverse areas including agriculture, tourism, and real estate development and cited the  Sissala East and West districts for for their massive maize farming which feed most parts of the country as well as  one of the biggest wildlife forest reserves ( Gbale Reserves) in the country adding that Investment opportunities abound”.

Hon. Duker also acknowledged some challenges facing the region including Boundary disputes between allodial owners/ communities, Multiple Sale of Lands,  Illegal felling of Rosewoods and  Illegal mining activities.

“I must say, Mr Chairman, in dealing with these issues, Members of the Upper West Regional Lands Commission should be fully guided by the provisions of the Lands Commission Act, 2008, Act 767 the Land Act, 2020 Act 1036.”

He also hoped the new members with mix  professional background would work to  tackle the challenges in the Region.

On his part, the  Upper West  Regional Minister Hon. Hafiz Bin Salih, said “l have no doubt that you will live up to expectation by working assiduously to ensure that government’s lands are well protected, effectively and efficiently utilized for the benefit of the Ghanaian populace”.

The Chairman of the reconstituted Regional Lands Commission, Alhaji Mohammed Abdul- Haq expressed his appreciation to the Deputy Minister and the government for the opportunity given them to serve their community an the country.
