National Labour Commission summons teacher unions, MoE over strike action

The National Labour Commission (NLC) has invited striking teacher unions (GNAT, NAGRAT and CCT-GH), the Ministry of Education and others to an emergency meeting over industrial strike action  declared by teacher unions.

On 8th November, 2022, the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations (MELR) has dragged the striking teacher unions to the National Labour Commission (NLC) over Dr Eric Nkansah’s appointment as the Director General of Ghana Education Service (GES).

According to the letter, the Pre-tertiary Teacher Unions raised concerns over the appointment of a new Director-General for the Ghana Education Service (GES) following which the MELR met the Leadership on Friday 4 November, 2022 to explore amicable solution to avoid any labour unrest and its implications.

However, the Unions had declared a nationwide strike and despite several attempts, they failed to call off the strike, and it is still ongoing.

In view of that, the National Labour Commission writes to invite the parties to appear before the Commission on Wednesday, 9th November, 2022 at 10:00 am for a hearing of the issues in dispute.

The Executive Secretary of National Labour Commission Dr. Bernice A. Welbeck said, with this intervention, Union is advised to stay all ongoing/intended action(s) and appear as scheduled.
