President Mahama cancels fuel allowance to all appointees

His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama has cancelled the of payment of fuel allowances and allocation of fuel to all political appointees.

This new development in his administration was announced by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President on July 15, 2025.

“The directive forms part of a broader curb in government expenditure aimed at cutting cost and channeling public funds into priority areas,” the release stated.

According to the release, “The President believes that leadership must also bear its part of the sacrifices it is calling on the people to make.”

“The latest cost-cutting measure follows sweeping reductions in the size of government through the appointment of fewer Ministers and Presidential Office staff. Other measures have included stopping satellite TV subscriptions for offices at the Presidency and other government facilities.”

This move, scrapping of fuel allowances and allocations to all political appointees is a very significant measure to cut cost however, the big question is which category of political appointees will be affected? Does it include heads of SOEs? How will their official vehicles be fueled? How much are we hoping to save?.

These are some questions Ghanaians are willing to know the insight. In a nutshell, this is a good step taken by President Mahama in terms of saving cost to fund projects for the country.
