UMaT Holds Sod Cutting Ceremony for 500-Bed Capacity SRC Hostel Project
September 9, 2024, Tarkwa – The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) Students’ Representative Council (SRC) has taken a major step towards addressing student accommodation challenges by officially breaking ground for the construction of the SRC Hostel.
The ceremony took place on September 9, 2024, with the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Richard K. Amankwah, and the Dean of Students, Assoc. Prof. Peter E. Baffoe, in attendance.
During the ceremony, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Amankwah commended the efforts of H.E. John Baguri, a former SRC President, for his pivotal role in realizing the long-anticipated dream of an SRC hostel.
He noted, “There have been talks about the building of an SRC hostel, but the first SRC President that took concrete steps to realize this dream is H.E. John Baguri. He is the one who put together a revenue source against fierce opposition, and two years afterward, we have accumulated enough revenue to start the project.”
The sod cutting marks a significant milestone, as it comes after years of effort to provide students with adequate accommodation.
The 500-bed capacity hostel project, which began as a concept during John Baguri’s tenure as SRC President, is now becoming a reality, thanks to a sustainable revenue model initiated during his administration.
In his remarks, Engr. John Baguri reflected on his time as SRC President and the initiatives his administration undertook to improve student welfare.
These included a scholarship scheme for brilliant but needy students, the construction of an access road, renovation of the recreational center, installation of garden benches, and organizing a wide array of entertainment programs such as the colour walk, live band sessions, and Miss UMaT, among others.
Baguri expressed his profound gratitude to UMaT’s management, particularly Vice-Chancellor Amankwah, for their unwavering support.
He also extended appreciation to his colleagues in the SRC, the student body, and his family for standing by him during his leadership journey.
He made special mention of Prof. Bernard Kumi-Boateng for his valuable advice and thanked his wife, Obaapa Twumwaa, and his sister, Esther Baguri, for their steadfast support.
Engr. Baguri concluded by dedicating this milestone to UMaT students, stating, “The celebration of this feat is dedicated to you. It is my utmost desire that we soon witness the commissioning of this 500-capacity hostel.”
The SRC Hostel project is set to significantly alleviate accommodation shortages at UMaT, ensuring a better living experience for students.
