The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) President of the University of Mines and Technology, Mr John Baguri, has commended the former President of the Republic of Ghana and First Chancellor of the University of Mines and Technology, Mr John Agyekum Kufuor, for his sterling leadership to mother Ghana and the world as a whole.
Mr Baguri also commended Mr Kufuor particularly for the support and goodwill that he has brought to the university, the University of Mines and Technology.
The SRC President listed several of the many achievements of the administration of President Kufuor as President of the Republic of Ghana as the basis for his commendation.
He cited the institution of what is now known as the National Health Insurance Scheme, the Free Maternal Health Care; the building of over two thousand hospitals, clinics and other health facilities; the implementation of Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty Programme; the School Feeding Programme; the establishment of the University of Mines and technology; the building of the Tamale and Essipong stadia; etc.
In recounting the challenges faced by the students of the university and making a request for a bus, Mr John Baguri said, “Your excellency, the enrollment of freshmen for this academic year has increased astronomically. Our understanding is that the number of freshmen registered for this year is over 2,200 which is about an 80 per cent increment over last year’s admission number.”
“This increase has led to a significant number of students living outside the four traditional halls. Some of these residential facilities are several kilometres away from campus, making commuting very difficult. The SRC is operating a shuttle system to help convey the students who are far away from campus to campus. However, there is only one bus in this system. This does not make the shuttle system as effective as we desire. Your Excellency, the SRC, the student body and the entire university will be very grateful if you could assist the SRC with a bus to help convey our students.”
In response, the former president indicated he would put in a word in that regard. He also stated that he was very happy to be the chancellor of the university and would do everything legitimate to help in the development of the university.
President John Agyekum Kufuor who established the university, the University of Mines and Technology, took office as chancellor of the university in November 2017.
