We’ll applaud parents who will freely pay fees under the Free SHS Policy – Education Minister

The debate as to whether parents can pay school fees for their wards under the Free Senior High School (FreeSHS) Policy has become a topical issue since the commmencement of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s Flagship Programme in 2017.

Many New Patriotic Party (NPP) govermment communicators including the former Minister of Education under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s first govermment Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh said, there’s no need for parents to pay fees for their children in any Pre-tertiary Institutions especially the Senior High Schools. According to earlier commentaries, they indicated that, the government is well-resourced to cater for all students under the FreeSHS Policy.

But, in a contrary view, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister for Education who served as Deputy Minister in-charge of pre-tertiary education, in a new statement said, parents who wish to pay the fees for their children despite the Free SHS programme are free to do so.

According to Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Ministry of Education under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government would applaud any parent who will volunteerily pay fees for their wards.

In an exclusive interview with Starr News’ journalist Francis Abban, Dr. Adutwum said, “if you want to pay fees for your child enjoying free SHS, you go to the school and give money to the headmaster. We’ll applaud you for that.”

He further said, “The kids being asked to go back home was a mistake by GES. The team has done well but there can be missteps and they apologized. I can tell parents that their children’s education is in good hands.”
