Breakdown of New NTC Restructured CPD points buildup for GES staff

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced a new structure for the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points buildup for teachers. The new structure is aimed at improving the quality of teaching and learning in Ghana’s pre-tertiary education space by ensuring that teachers receive adequate training and development.
Under the new structure, teachers are required to accumulate 20 CPD points per year. These points are divided into two categories: 60% of the points will come from mandatory training by GES, while 40% will come from specialized/targeted training by service providers and recommended trainings initiated by the teacher or approved by the direct supervisor.

The mandatory training by GES includes Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), which will attract two points per term, and Continuous Professional Development (CDP) days, which will also attract two points per term. SHS teachers can break down the CDP days to suit the semester timetable. In total, this category will attract 12 points per year.
The specialized/targeted training category will attract four points per year, two points per training, and will be conducted by service providers. The recommended training category will also attract four points per year, two points per training, and will be initiated by the teacher or approved by the direct supervisor.
It is important to note that these trainings have always attracted a maximum of two points by default and depend on the teacher’s performance on the final assessment. In total, this category will attract eight points per year.
Also, teachers will be required to accumulate 20 CPD points per year to qualify for promotion. Over three years, teachers will need to accumulate 60 points to qualify for license renewal.
The new structure for CPD points buildup is a step in the right direction towards improving the quality of education in Ghana. It will ensure that teachers receive the necessary training and development to enhance their skills and knowledge, which will ultimately benefit the students. The GES encourages all teachers to take advantage of the new structure and accumulate the required CPD points to qualify for promotion and license renewal.
