GFA embarks on a 21 days road map- search for a head coach

Ghana Football Association (GFA) has embarked on a rigorous search for a coach for the country’s national team, the Black Stars days after sacking the team’s Head Coach Chris Hughton, and dissolving the Technical team.

In the wake of the disappointing exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has unveiled a rigorous set of criteria for selecting the next coach for the country’s national team, the Black Stars.

Recognizing the need for a fresh start following the underwhelming performance under former coach Chris Hughton, the GFA has established a five-member committee tasked with finding a suitable replacement within the next three (3) weeks.

The GFA’s statement highlights the importance of a proven winning track record and extensive coaching experience spanning at least 15 years. The ideal candidate must align with Ghana’s football DNA and possess a coaching philosophy that resonates with the national team’s ethos. Additionally, the GFA emphasizes the significance of discipline and tactical acumen.

The search committee comprises prominent figures in the football landscape, including GFA Vice President Mark Addo as the chair, legal practitioner Ace Ankomah as the vice chair, Professor Joseph Kwame Mintah, Director of Coaching Education at the GFA, Ghanaian football legend Opoku Nti, and William Caesar Kartey, Chief Director of the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

However, concerns have been raised regarding the competency of the committee, particularly regarding the selection of Mark Addo as the leader. Critics have pointed out Addo’s involvement in the appointment of former coach Milovan Rajevac, whose second tenure proved ineffective as Ghana exited the 2021 AFCON group stage after a loss to Comoros.

The GFA’s stringent criteria for the next Black Stars coach reflect the association’s determination to revitalize the team and achieve success on the international stage. As the search committee begins its work, all eyes will be on the selection process and the eventual appointment of a coach who can inspire the team and bring back the glory days of Ghanaian football.
