Rainstorm destroys the roofs of 5 Basic School buildings in South Tongu [Videos/Photos]

A heavy rainstorm has ripped off some five (5) different Basic Schools in the South Tongu District of the Volta region.

Reports picked by Coverghana.com.gh indicated that, on Thursday, 4th March, 2021, there was a heavy rainstorm that ripped off some school buildings in Dabala, Dzebetato, Lakpo and Anyidzekpo in the South Tongu District.

The disaster as witnessed by Coverghana.com.gh has caused several degrees of damages including cracks in the building, ripped off roofing of the school buildings, destroyed desks, chairs, tables, books and other teaching and learning resources in the school.

The affected schools in the District include; Dabala Roman Catholic (R/C) Comboni Basic School, Dabala Evangelical Presbyterian (EP) Basic “B” Kindergarten School, Dzebetato D/A Basic School, Lakpo D/A Kindergarten block and Anyidzekpo D/A Basic School.

Narrating what happened, Revered Father Robert Elikem Kwasi Vedemku of St. John the Baptist Church, Dabala who is also the Local Manager of the Dalaba R/C Comboni Basic who witnessed the incident said, the disaster happened around 2:30pm immediately after school. According to him, there were no casualties because, students/pupils/learners were not in the classroom at the time of the incident.

On the other hands, the Head teacher of Dzebetato D/A Basic School Mr. Believer Hottor added that, the disaster occurred around 2:05pm in his school soon after school closed. He noted that, they saw the rain coming and immediately closed the students to go home. “I was called at home that, there’s a disaster happening in the school, so I quickly informed my colleague teachers around. After the rain, all of us came down to the school, and it is rather unfortunate that, the whole structure was condemned. As it stance now, the children are at home until further notice. We could not have known what would have happened to the student if school was to be in section.” The Head teacher explained.

At the moment, about one-thousand (1,000) pupils/students of the affected classrooms would have to be at home until the entire ripped off buildings are fix before teaching and learning can take place.

Speaking further, he said, the rainstorm has affected the entire roofing which needs to be fixed and renovation of the entire classroom blocks as early as possible for academic works to commence.

They have therefore appealed to the government through the Ghana Education Service, NGO’s, philanthropist, the South Tongu Member of Parliament Hon. Wisdom Kobena Woyome and the District Chief Executive Hon. Emmanuel Louis Agama and the general public etc. to assist the school reroof the classroom block.
