V/R: 3 development management Students of KNUST build washroom facility for Liati-Wote Community
A three (3) member team of Master of Science (MSc) Students of the Development Management programme at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region has constructed a washroom facility for the Liati Wote community in the Afadzato South District of the Volta Region.
The students who executed the project under their group name, ‘The Grassroots Initiative for Development (GIFD)’, handed over the facility to the community on Thursday, 19th November, 2020 at a brief ceremony at Liati Wote. They students were Messrs Wisdom Kpegba and Abdul-Baki Umar as well as Ms. Gifty Esenam Agbodza.

The project formed part of the requirements for the award of their MSc. Development Management programme certificate at KNUST under the course, Social Entrepreneurship and Philanthropy Project (SEaP).
The urinal facility has the capacity to accommodate ten (10) people at a time, five (5) males and five (5) females. It is equipped with potable running water and eight (8) hand wash stations to encourage people to wash their hands after using the facility.
Present at the handing-over ceremony was the Chief of Liati Wote, Togbe Kodadza IV and his elders, Queen Mother of Liati Wote, Mama Agbonor II, some pupils from the Liati Wote D.A. Primary School, community members as well as the Head Pastor of Evangelical Presbyterian (EP) Church of the District, Rev. Ernest Akpi.

The Team Leader, Ms. Gifty Esenam Agbodza, reiterated during the handing-over event that, the group applied the Participatory Rural Appraisal Approach (PRAA) to initiate and execute the project. With this approach, the community was involved in the entire project from start to finish. The community also supported the project with labour as well as some building materials such as wood and sand.
On a broader level, the project is aligned with Goal Six (6) of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which seeks to ensure clean water and improved sanitation for all. This project would go a long way to enhance the community’s sanitation issues, especially among the pupils of the Liati Wote D.A Primary School who, hitherto depended on an old and dilapidated washroom for their use, a situation which led not only to unsanitary urination around the school compound but also unhygienic conditions in the larger community.
Speaking at the function, the Chief of Liati Wote, Togbe Kodadza IV commended the team and KNUST for this bold initiative. He pledged, on behalf of the community, to maintain the facility well and urged others to emulate such initiatives in order to promote development in the area.

The Chairman of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) of the Liati Wote D.A. Basic School, Mr. Richard Kosi spoke at the ceremony on behalf of the parents and teachers. He observed that Liati Wote had never witnessed a project of this kind, implemented by students from any University in Ghana. He therefore expressed the gratitude of the community and the school to the team for the project.
The team later donated some liquid soaps and face masks to the community to further promote safety and Covid-19 support efforts in the area. The community also decorated the three (3) students with beads in appreciation for their kind gesture to the Liati Wote community.
