The University of Ghana, Legon (UG) has provided reassurance to parents regarding its proactive efforts to improve student accommodation on campus.
During the recent graduation ceremony held on January 24, 2024, Vice-Chancellor Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo disclosed that the university is engaged in collaborative ventures with private partners to expand student housing options.
“The University is committed to increasing the availability of accommodation for our students. We are actively collaborating with private partners to expand student housing, and numerous private hostels are currently at various stages of completion,” Professor Appiah Amfo stated.
She further highlighted ongoing construction projects such as the Diamond Jubilee Hostel, which is near completion and being funded through internal resources, as well as the Ghana University Staff Superannuation Scheme (GUSSS) student hostel and PhD apartments, which are also under development.
“When these initiatives, along with the private hostels being constructed, are finalized, they will significantly contribute to the overall capacity of available beds,” she added.
The Vice-Chancellor assured students and parents that the university will maintain its commitment to allocate traditional halls to incoming undergraduate students through the Open Randomized Bed Allocation System. This system ensures fairness and transparency in bed allocation, granting all students an equal opportunity to secure a room, regardless of their internet connectivity status.
These improvements in student housing are a direct response to the increased enrollment at the university. Currently, the University of Ghana has a total student enrollment of 63,820.
