Students of Battor District Assembly (D/A) Basic School in the District capital of North Tongu express worry over lack of classroom blocks for effective teaching and learning to take place.

The students lead by Yawli Sarah, a Junior High School two (2) student of Battor D/A Basic School who represented their concerns to the Parliamentary Candidates at a debate organized by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) said, they are stranded and don’t know what to do as schools reopen in January 2021.

Narrating the situation of the delapidated school structure, Yawli Sarah said, “Students of Battor D/A Junior High School have been living in a delapidated structure for the past six (6) years and lot of proposals have been made to the District Assembly for classroom blocks to be put up for the school but all efforts towards this only proved futile.”

According to her, Early this year, Hon. Richard Collins Arku, the District Chief Executive sent delegation to come and take photograph of the school, so that something can be done about it.

In another instance, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament also came and ordered the improvised structure to be pulled down immediately as it post a death threat to both teachers and students while he make provision for classroom blocks to be built.

According to the frustrated students, till date, nothing has been done to this effect. They therefore ask the North Tongu Parliamentary Candidates what will be done to address the issue. “I will like to know the fate of Battor D/A Junior High School as school will resume shortly probably in January 2021.” Yawli Sarah asked on behalf of her fellow students.

In addressing the issue, the incumbent MP, Hon. Sammul Okudzeto Ablakwa said, he has already engaged the Paramount Chief of Battor Traditional Area Togbega Patamia Dzekle VII to get a land to build an entirely new school for Battor-Dugame. According to him, the population of Battor has increased where the existing Schools cannot accommodate students hence the need to build a new school for Students. He noted that, expansions have been done and there is no room for further expansions.

Addressing the question, the District Chief Executive for the North Tongu District Assembly who doubles as the NPP Parliamentary Candidate reiterated that, Battor D/A Basic School will soon benefit from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s One Million per One Constituency. According to him, the New Patriotic Party government will, in no time build a six (6) unit classroom blocks for the school. His response made the other candidates burst into laughter, though the reason for their laughter cannot be ascertain.
